Mariah Carey’s answer to ‘what happens when we die’ resurfaces after deaths of mom and sister

Following the tragic news that Mariah Carey lost both her mom and sister on the same day, fans have been sharing her powerful answer to being asked about what happens when we die.

In a statement to PEOPLE, the 55-year-old ‘Fantasy’ singer said: “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Mom Patricia died at the age of 87, and Alison passed away aged 63.

As of this writing, no additional information regarding Patricia and Alison’s deaths has been shared.

After sharing the heartbreaking news, a resurfaced video of the singer taking part in an interview with Stephen Colbert back in 2022.

During the interview, Carey and Colbert had some back and forth banter about the age-old question: “What do you think happens when we die?”

However, it wasn’t long before Carey confidently told Colbert: “I already know.”

The singer then explains: “I have faith,” before sharing the definition of faith using a passage from the Bible, Hebrews 11:1 — “The assured expectation of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.”

Given the singer’s recent heartbreaking tragedy, fans have taken to social media platforms like X to share the clip, as well as praise the singer for her strength.

“Mariah Carey is an incredibly strong and resilient woman. I pray her faith provides her with comfort,” one person wrote.

The passage clearly means a lot to the singer, as she included it in the opening pages of her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

In her book, Carey also spoke about her turbulent relationship with her mother, writing: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.

“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”

Elsewhere, she wrote about sister Alison, saying that when she was 12 years old, Alison, (then 20), put her at risk of being pimped out, per Sky News.

Alison filed a lawsuit against Carey in February 2023 disputing the claims made in her sister’s memoir, arguing that Mariah “presented no evidence to substantiate these serious allegations”.

Mariah’s father sadly passed away of cancer in 2002. She also has an older brother, Morgan.
