England Fans Caused A Stir On The American Internet When They Unexpectedly Started Singing Bruce Springsteen’S ‘Dancing In The Dark’ During The Euros—Here’s Why Their Surprising Choice Sparked Such A Reaction

 

English soccer fans are looking to Bruce Springsteen for a spark.

Specifically, fans of English player Phil Foden. They’ve changed the lyrics of the Boss’ “Dancing in the Dark” to support Foden as he plays for England in the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.

“Can’t start a fire, can’t start a fire without a spark/Phil Foden’s on fire, he’ll be playing the Germans off the park,” sing English fans to the tune of Springsteen’s 1984 hit.

Groups of fans were filmed singing the new version of “Dancing in the Dark” in Germany on the Football Away Days X account.

“England’s new song is absolutely quality!” Football Away Days opined.

However Foden, who plays for Manchester City, did not excel in England’s 1-0 win over Serbia on June 16.

“It makes me sad when I see a player of this quality in and out of games,” said Foden’s Manchester City and England teammate Micah Richards to the BBC.

England’s next game is Thursday, June 20, against Denmark.

English fans at the Euro tournaments have previously rendered anthems from the melodies of Atomic Kitten’s “Whole Again”;  Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Achy Breaky Heart”; and Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” according to the Daily Mail.

Springsteen and the E Street Band have resumed their European tour after the Boss took a four-show hiatus due to “vocal issues.” They’re playing Monday, June 17, in Madrid, and head to Hannover, Germany, on Friday, July 5 — the same date the Euro 2024 quarterfinals start in Stuttgart and Hamburg, Germany.
