Much like how Pavarotti is synonymous with “Nessun dorma,” Bocelli’s legacy is closely tied to “Time to Say Goodbye,” which had modest beginnings but hinted at the extraordinary career ahead of him. Before the song gained international acclaim and before Bocelli partnered with Sarah Brightman, he first performed “Con te partirò” on stage during the 1995 Sanremo Music Festival.

Initially skeptical about the song’s competition potential, Bocelli shared, “When it arrived at my house, the song was a candidate for the Sanremo festival. I thought, ‘This song is not good because the festival is a competition. It’s a deep song. A timeless song. But it’s not for a competition.’” His intuition proved correct; they finished fourth at the festival.

However, that was just the beginning. Bocelli recorded the track for his self-titled album, which topped the charts in France and Belgium, setting records in both countries. By early 1996, “Con te partirò” was gaining significant traction, and British soprano Sarah Brightman convinced him to perform a duet with her, incorporating some English lyrics for a special event on November 23, 1996. This rendition became known as “Time to Say Goodbye,” blending a memorable chorus with orchestral arrangements and marking a landmark moment in classical-pop music.

The song was penned by Italian rock star Zucchero, who first met Bocelli in 1992 while auditioning tenors for a demo of his song “Miserere,” initially intended for Pavarotti. After hearing Bocelli’s demo, Pavarotti encouraged Zucchero to work with him, leading to a trio recording of the song. Soon after, Bocelli secured a recording contract and made a strong impression at the Sanremo festival, winning both the newcomers’ section and an invitation to compete in the main event.

It was during that 1995 performance of “Con te partirò” that Bocelli captivated the world with his soaring high notes and rich vibrato. Celine Dion once remarked, “If God would have a singing voice, he must sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli.” For Bocelli, finding his signature song was a moment of pure joy, instilling confidence and optimism not just in him, but in everyone who collaborated with him.
